Patients are increasingly considering center-based hemodialysis (HD) care as a treatment option. The purpose of this study was to provide information on the patient perspective in four countries to better understand the feasibility of community-based HD care. A survey was distributed via email to consenting patients who had received a transplant from a center in each of the participating countries (Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Respondents rated importance of dialysis care attributes, characteristics of care provided in community-based HD, and preferred models of HD care. Descriptive statistics and multilevel logistic regression modeling were used to analyze the survey data. The survey response rate was 16.4% (n = 595), with a mean (SD) age of 59.7 (15.4) years and 92% male. The respondents were predominantly in private health insurance (96%), with family members providing care (81%). The respondent's overall satisfaction with their current HD care was 3.5 out of a maximum score of 5, with the most preferred attributes being the staff (4.4) and facility (4.3). The least preferred attributes included the waiting time (3.3), the transportation to and from the center (3.5), and blood transfusions (3.6). Patients believed that a community-based HD facility was feasible, but would require support from the local healthcare system and a different social climate. Patients reported that the most preferred aspects of HD care were the staff and the facility. A community-based HD care model may be feasible for a subset of patients but would require support from the local healthcare system.Recently, we have developed a method to produce large numbers of these light-emitting diodes by a self-assembly process in a matrix of an insulator, in which the p-n junction of each diode is protected by a particle of a positively chargeable material.
